Deze giftige, 1- of 2-jarige plant uit de composietenfamilie komt oorpsronkelijk voor in Europa, tot West-Azië en in Noord-Afrika.

Gifsla lijkt op kompassla, maar de bladeren zijn meestal niet gedraaid.

Deze plant werd eeuwenlang medicinaal gebruikt vanwege de rustgevende en vochtafdrijvende werking.

Zaai vanaf maart

Gifsla bloeit in juli en augustus en kan 50 tot 150 cm hoog worden.

In een zakje zitten slechts 6 zaden.
